Experts may offer different theories of its origin, but one thing is clear: there is Valentine’s Day because people wanted to celebrate love. The recognition of such strong emotion developed many traditions that we know today like exchanging love letters, giving flowers, and handing over chocolates.

While letters or cards and flowers are already an ancient Valentine’s Day gifts, chocolates have just recently been popular in some countries. However, chocolates were already used as a gift during the Aztecs period. Aztecs believed that wisdom and power will be acquired by eating the fruit of the cocoa tree, from which chocolates are created. They also deemed chocolates had nourishing, fortifying, and aphrodisiac qualities.

While the rest of the world does their daily regulars, the Chinese celebrates Valentine’s Day every 15th of August.

Chinese Valentine’s Day, called Qi Xi or The Night of Sevens, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as ‘The Festival to Plead for Skills,’ ‘The Seventh Sister’s Birthday,’ and ‘The Night of Skills.

It has also been noted that over $300 million is spent annually for online dating. And with over 800 online dating sites that are currently active, it is expected to grow double in the years to come.

Giving gifts on Valentine’s Day has been a tradition common to many countries. Some say because such occasion has been commercialized. Some believe it to be an important day to show love to loved ones.  

Even before, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by giving love letters and later modified to giving flowers and chocolates until anything will do as long as it shows feelings of love. When people hear the word ‘jig’, they don’t necessarily associate it with dancing. For those people that don’t know, a ‘jig’ is actually a form of folk dance that is lively in nature. The name itself, ‘jig’, is actually derived from ‘giguer’, which is a French term that means ‘to jump’, hence, the lively nature of the dance.

This form of dance is commonly associated with Scottish and Irish dance music, but it actually originated from England during the sixteenth century. The dance was actually performed in 2/4 times. Since then, it has taken different forms and adaptation in a variety of time signatures. The ‘jig’ is actually divided into different forms, all of which would be discussed in this article.
