Information about the Columbus Assisted Living Facilities
While new retirement communities may start out with a 60-plus population, the residents soon grow older, and when they reach the 70-to-80- plus bracket, their needs often change. Assisted living facilities have been designed for people who are not completely able to live independently, and who may require some help with the activities of daily living (ADLs)—getting dressed and undressed, bathing, using the toi¬let, getting into or out of a bed or chair, and walking. In addition, these individuals may re¬quire reminders to take prescribed medication. However, they do not need the services of a nursing home. The American Seniors Housing Association, reports that about 7,000 professionally run Columbus Assisted Living Facilities operate nationwide, for a total of about 520,000 separate units.

An assisted living facility offers rented rooms or apartments in a structure where meals may be served in a dining room, and where housekeep¬ing and personal services are available. There are several hotels now constructing this type of facility nationwide to operate like resort hotels. The assisted living facility provides a program of social and recreational activities, as well as security and medical services. A signifi¬cant advantage of such a facility is the opportu¬nity for its residents to enjoy social contact. The one-time entrance fee for a typical assisted living facility is equal to one month's rent at that facility. For a single-occupant room or apart¬ment, this monthly rental fee can range from 2,500 dollars to 4,000 dollars. A second occupant adds anoth¬er $500 to $600 a month. In addition to the entrance fee and the monthly rent, the facility may charge a supple¬mental fee based on the services rendered that month. Depending on whether the assistance provided is considered minimum, moderate, or complete, this supplemental fee can range from 2,500 dollars to 4,500 dollars a month.
